Gabriel was talking to Rick about his reaction to all of them surrounding him. I got so excited when he asked him why he smiled. I thought he was going to say "because I saw you" since I still think it's DUMB writing for him to have smiled because "he got his army"......yet he still replied with ....."someone taught me you can make friends of your enemies".
Ugh.....DUMB WRITING.
I am going to go with...... "he smiled because he saw Gabriel."
FUCK YOU GIMPLE.

I automatically thought Rick was smiling because he saw his army, I forgot that fast that Gabriel was there lol. I figured he was geeking out since he knew those were the kind of people he needed to fight the Saviors. I could see how his eyes were gleaming as he surveyed them and their surroundings. Perhaps though, he was thinking of Gabriel's example at least, while he was smiling, to make friends of enemies?

I'd like to complain why I didn't see Carl at all. Seriously that dialogue is a Easter egg from what I've read tonight from the comics "someone told me you can make friends of your enemies".

When I first saw Rick I had the feeling he saw someone he knew in the back of the crowd. I knew someone had Gabriel and knew it was not the Saviors. So I thought Rick either saw Gabriel and hoped he had already tried to bring them on board or he figured he would be able to talk them into it.

Which smile are we talking about?
The first Rick smile when they are surrounded? I would agree that Rick is smiling because he thinks he may have found an answer to his numbers problem.
Or, the smile when Rick is exiting the "thunderdome"? That is a smile for many reasons. He won, he lived, he was able to forge (for now) a tenuous alliance.
Did he smile when they brought out Gabriel? I cannot recall. But I do think that the "friends becoming enemies" was Rick's confirmation to Gabriel that Rick did in fact now see Gabriel as part of the family. That Gabriel is important enough to fight for, to search for, to believe in.

The actor that plays Gabe even mentioned on Talking Dead how that nod gave Gabe confidence.
