Robert E. Howard 1906 - 1936
Has anyone here ever read the works of Robert E. Howard?
Howard was a "pulp fiction" writer, and a founder of the "sword and sorcery" genre. Howard's wrote during the 20's and 30's, and many of stories were published in pulp magazines like Weird Tales. Howards creations include Conan the Cimmerian, Solomon Kane, and King Kull.
Conan the Cimmerian, Robert E. Howard's most famous character.
Tragically, Howard's life was short; at 30-years-old he committed suicide after struggling with his mother's declining health and his own depression. Howard was nearly forgotten until the movie version of his greatest character, Conan the Barbarian was released in 1982 starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Today, Howard's work is readily available and continues to inspire and entertain readers around the world.

Ironically, Howard wrote the genres of sword and sorcery, adventure, westerns, and historical fiction, but I think he never wrote science fiction.

Thank you, Thhainted.
Last year I read Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan of the Apes, and was surprised by how good it was...until numerous coincidences and conveniences ruined an otherwise solid adventure story. I plan, however, to continue reading the Tarzan series later this year.

Robert E. Howard's relationship with aspiring writer Novalyne Price was told in the film The Whole Wide World (1996) starring Vincent D'Onofrio and Rene Zellweger.
This isn't a great trailer, but I like Howard's explanation on why he became a writer. "I'm the boss. Typewriter's the employee. No arguments."
There's also an imitation of Howard's famous photograph (see starting post) at the 0:19 mark.
