The ratings for season 7 have been on the decline and that seems to be a point that many critics just love pointing out over and over. While the numbers do not lie and yes, TWD has lost some of its ratings charm it by no means is limping along. The show is in its 7th season and it is quite normal for shows of this age to start feeling their age. The reality of those numbers, while disheartening, is certainly not the death knell that many critics would have us believe. I read an article this past summer addressing the ratings of television shows and how that view has changed. Since the dawn of tv ratings that number meant your ad revenue, they were the source that would dictate just how much you could charge for a 30 second spot to hawk your wares. With the way television is now being watched those same day / live viewing numbers, while still relevant, do not tell the whole story. The USA network, as an example, only submits their Live +3 day viewing numbers for prospective ad revenue. It seems that this (live +3 day) set of numbers is becoming all the more important than the same day/live numbers. So for those interested here are the numbers for episodes 9 through 12: (Key demo numbers are viewers 18-49 years of age) Episode 9 (week of Feb. 6-12)
Live / SD viewers 12,015 mil Live / +3 day viewers 15,932 mil (up 33%)Live / SD key demo 5.7 Live / +3 key demo 7.7 (up 35%) Episode 10 (week of Feb. 13-19) Live / SD viewers 11,087 mil Live / +3 day viewers 15,236 mil (up 37%)Live / SD key demo 5.3 Live / +3 key demo 7.4 (up 40%) Episode 11 (week of Feb. 20-26)Live / SD viewers 10,420 mil Live / +3 day viewers 14,740 mil (up 41%)Live / SD key demo 5.0 Live / +3 key demo 7.1 (up 42%) Episode 12 (week of Feb. 27-Mar. 5)Live / SD viewers 10,160 mil Live / +3 day viewers 13,656 mil (up 34%)Live / SD key demo 4.7 Live / +3 key demo 6.6 (up 40%) Episode 13 (week of Mar. 6-12) Live / SD viewers 10,680 mil Live / +3 day viewers not yet availableLive / SD key demo 4.9 Live / +3 key demo not yet available source: www.tvbythenumbers.zap2it.comIt is interesting to note that while both the numbers of viewers and the key demo numbers rise significantly in the live +3 ratings, it is the key demo numbers that have the greatest percentage increase. A clear indication of who is watching their tv programming either by DVR, on demand or streaming. And those are the people that the advertisers pay close attention to. I am of the opinion that the last three episodes will have an upswing in the numbers as indicated by episode 13 numbers when compared to episodes 11 and 12. Not to mention that the set up for "war" has begun...fun times ahead, fun times ahead!

I really really hope that a lot of people are just tired of the drawn out "march to war" going on and ready to just SEE it and hopefully go from there.

However, pffffft fair weather fans. I do think that a number of cry babies, uptight and rigid kind of people got all bent out of shape over the premier and the level of violence- as you said pffffft fair weather fans. I also think that there were a fair amount of people who quit watching because of glenn's death - again, as you said pffffft fair weather fans. And the series is in its 7th season so a drop in ratings is not surprising. I suppose adding all of these "reasons" together could spell a significant drop in viewership. Yet, while it still stings a little, the drop is not so significant that it is an inevitable sign of a sooner rather than later death. I do however think that TPTB should sit up and take notice of the significant drop. Changes made for improvement are always a move in the right direction, but I hope like hell they do not end up pandering to the crybabies, whiners, moaners and complainers!

I don't think the numbers are that concerning. As you said, it's normal for shows to have their viewership begin to decline after a few years.
It may not necessarily accurately represent the popular opinion of viewers as a whole, but I think what AMC and TWD staff should be concerned about is the growing list of complaints from fans. This season in particular has been very harshly criticised by a lot of fans, and personally I see a lot more people acknowledging the flaws of this season than praising it. That doesn't seem like a great sign for the future of the show. Hell, even several friends of mine who I introduced the show to have watched season 7 and haven't enjoyed it much.
They'll need to re-think their game plan for season 8, or risk this audience disapproval becoming a growing trend. In that event, that is when the ratings will likely become worrisome.

TWD is still most popular show on television! But I do see a decline in viewership. I still watch live, but do the ratings go by live, and is it because of people are streaming/recording right?

Facts about season 7B and the ratings:
*The season finale's ratings are a best for the show since its February 12 (episode 9) scored a 5.7 in the key demo (again this is only taking episodes 9-16 into account)
* It is down 22% from the 6.9 key demo rating of the season 6 finale
*For the season as a whole the show is down about 17% from season 6. Putting that in key demo numbers season 5 average of 5.4 versus season 6 average of 6.5
Given those numbers will execs at AMC be so quick to renew TWD for season 9 or do you think they will wait well into season 8 before making that decision.
Also, with the ratings taking such a hit this season, realistically how many seasons to you expect the show has left? Not how many they have enough story for but how many will AMC be willing to shell out money for?

In the list of ratings I have posted: Those watching live or same day (example: those who watch the encore presentation of the episode that airs after The Talking Dead) are noted in the list as Live/SDThose watching next day (i.e. on demand, dvr playback, streaming, etc.) are noted in the list as Live/+3 day Ad executives while still paying attention to live/same day viewership or also paying more and more attention to the live +3 numbers and to some degree the live +7 numbers. The landscape of how we watch television has also changed the landscape of how ad executives choose who to advertise with

These ratings are actually really good for a show in its 7th season, usually shows are getting ready to wrap up by now. There's definitely going to be a 9th season, no doubt about that... but the way season 8 and 9 go down is gonna be telling, for TWD's future that is. I believe part of the decline in ratings is because it got too scary for people, some friends bowed out after the S7 premier because they didn't like how scary and stressful it was. This gaming forum I'm going to(which has a LOT of members) also had a lot of people bowing out because it got too much for them. Which sucks, because I don't want a censored TWD, but it would be ironic and shitty if this ends up being TWD's downfall.

I agree that considering the show is in its 7th season that the ratings are still as high as they are.
I do think that you are correct in that the ratings for seasons 8 and 9 will determine if they reach that always talked about number of 12 seasons.
